Cooking time: 20 mins

Ingredients needed to make German Yeast Dumplings:

  • 3 ½ cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup lukewarm milk ( at 110 degrees F)
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup lukewarm water
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 tsp butter, softened
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Cooking instructions for German Yeast Dumplings:

  • Stir in the sugar into the lukewarm water until it dissolves and empty the packet and yeast into it.
  • Whisk them together to mix well and set aside for a couple of minutes before stirring the mixture further until the yeast dissolves.
  • Let it rest for about 5 minutes, in a warm place to allow the yeast to activate.
  • Crack the egg into a large mixing bowl, and whisk it thoroughly until the yolk breaks completely.
  • Drizzle the melted butter into it, followed by the milk, yeast solution and a dash of nutmeg.
  • Season with salt and whisk them all together until they blend into a uniform mixture.
  • Add the flour gradually, few tbsp at a time, while beating it into the whisked egg-milk mixture, until all of it is used up to form a smooth dough.
  • Dust the working surface of your kitchen lightly with flour and place the ball of dough on it.
  • Punch the dough down with your knuckles to knead for about 10 minutes until it turns flexible and smoother; keep dusting flour into the surface at intervals to stop the dough from sticking it to it.
  • Grease a bowl with softened butter and transfer the dough into it.
  • Roll the dough along the sides of the bowl to butter it lightly and wrap it up in a kitchen towel.
  • Set aside for an hour in a warm place, until it doubles in size.
  • Give a sharp blow to the dough with your fist and work it with your hands again for 3-4 minutes.
  • Split the dough into 12 equal parts and roll each portion into a small, 1 ½’’ wide ball.
  • Place an oven rack in a roasting pan and line it with a moist kitchen towel.
  • Place dough balls on it, spaced a couple of inches apart and fill the pan with water so that it stands an inch from the base.
  • Heat the water in the pan over high heat, until it starts boiling.
  • Cover it firmly and lower the heat to moderate.
  • Steam the balls for about 20 minutes or until they are cooked through yet remains firm.
  • Arrange the steamed dumplings on a large serving plate alongside meat or fruit dessert.
