Cooking time: 0 mins
Ingredients needed to make a classic Cuban Mojito:
- 50 ml white rum, preferably, Havana Blanco or Bacardi
- Small handful of large fresh mint leaves, about 6-8 would do.
- 1 ripe and juicy lime
- 1 heaping tsp brown sugar/ two brown sugar cubes
- Ice cubes
Cooking instructions for a classic Cuban Mojito:
- While choosing the mint leaves, make a point that they are fresh and free of any brown spots or lesions.
- Roll the lime between your palms to make it more tender and juicy.
- Slice it into halves and each half into quarters; you will get about 4-5 wedges from a large lime.
- Squeeze the juice out of the lime wedges into the cocktail shaker and plop them into the vessel as well.
- Crush the lime wedges with a pestle or muddling stick, in the base of the shaker so that the oil in the skin of the oil adds a sharp tartness and kick to the mojito.
- Empty a heaping tsp of the brown sugar into the shaker. In case you are using brown sugar cubes, crush them into a fine powder with the pestle similarly into the shaker.
- Add a bout of rum into shaker and fill half of it with solid ice cubes, straight from the freezer. Avoid melting ice cubes to prevent the cocktail from becoming watery.
- Tear the mint leaves into halves and throw them into the shaker.
- Fasten the lid to the shaker and shake rigorously until you can feel a freezing coldness of the shaker in your hands.
- Empty the contents of the shaker into a short tumbler and insert a straw.
- Serve chilled.
- If you don’t prefer to enjoy the mojito on the rocks, pour it into a tall glass and top it up with lemonade or plain soda.
- Serve and sip in!
