French Toast Napoleon

French Toast Napoleon is an adaptation of two classic dishes, French toast and the French pastry known as “Napoleon” or mille-feuille. The name “French toast” comes from the French term “pain perdu,” meaning “lost bread,” referring to bread that would have otherwise gone to waste. The Napoleon dessert, known for its layers of puff pastry and cream, inspired this layered French toast dish.

Serving Suggestions and Pairings

French Toast Napoleon is best served as a brunch or breakfast item, and it is ideal for special occasions due to how rich it is. The layers of whipped cream, strawberries (or other berries), and pecans (or other nuts) make it a satisfying and complete dish on its own. For a balanced meal, you could serve it with a light fruit salad on the side or pair it with savory breakfast items like scrambled eggs or bacon to offset the sweetness. Note though, that dish alone is very high in calories!

French Toast Napoleon pairs well with a variety of drinks. A fresh cup of coffee or espresso enhances the richness of the dish, while a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice provides a refreshing contrast. Or try a mimosa for brunch!

Uses for Leftovers

Leftover French Toast Napoleon can be easily reheated and served again. However, since the whipped cream and fruit can make the toast soggy, it’s best to store the components separately. If you have extra French toast slices, they can be used to make a breakfast sandwich with eggs, or chopped and mixed into a bread pudding. Alternatively, leftover French toast can be cut into smaller pieces and used as a topping for yogurt or parfaits, adding a crunchy texture to lighter dishes.

Ingredients

  • For the French Toast Napoleon:
  • 6 slices of egg bread
  • 2 cups French toast batter (recipe below)
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 3 cups strawberries (or other berries of choice), sliced and dusted with sugar
  • ½ cup glazed pecans or walnuts
  • Maple syrup, heated
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • For the Batter:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 eggs
  • ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp sugar

Instructions

  • Prepare the Batter: In a blender, combine the milk, eggs, cinnamon, and sugar. Blend until smooth, then pour the batter into a large bowl.
  • Soak the Bread: Dip each bread slice into the batter, ensuring it is well-coated. Gently press the bread to absorb the batter. Set aside for 10 minutes to allow the bread to fully soak.
  • Cook the French Toast: Heat the melted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter foams, place the soaked bread slices into the skillet. Cook each side for about 4 minutes, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining slices.
  • Assemble the Napoleon:
  • Place one French toast slice on a plate and spread a layer of sliced strawberries over it.
  • Add a second slice of French toast on top, followed by another layer of strawberries.
  • Top with a third French toast slice and scatter a smaller amount of strawberries over it.
  • Finish with a large dollop of whipped cream and garnish with glazed pecans.
  • Finishing Touches: Dust the stack with powdered sugar, then drizzle warm maple syrup around and over the French toast stack.
  • Serve: Repeat the assembly for the second serving and serve alongside a small bowl of heated maple syrup.
