How to Cook Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Sauce

Ingredients needed to make Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Sauce:

  • 2 lb lean ground beef
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, cleaned, stems trimmed and sliced into fourths
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 medium shallots, minced
  • ¼ cup dry breadcrumbs, unseasoned
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup dry red wine
  • 1 tbsp + 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 can low-sodium beef broth
  • ½ tsp ground mustard
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

Cooking instructions for Salisbury Steak With Mushroom Sauce:

  • Warm up your oven to 350 degrees F with a rack placed midway within it.
  • Place the ground meat in a bowl and pour in the beaten eggs.
  • Add the breadcrumbs, mustard, salt, ground pepper and a couple of tsp Worcestershire sauce into it and stir them all together until well combined.
  • Split the mixture into 8 equal portions and mold each of them into 3 ½’’x 2 ½’’ x 1’’ patties; keep aside.
  • Melt a tbsp of butter in a large skillet over moderate heat until it foams and place the patties on it, 4 at a time.
  • Brown each side for 3-4 minutes, and drain them out into 13’’x9’’ baking dish.
  • Set the fat dripping aside and melt rest of the butter in the same pan over moderate heat.
  • Throw in the shallots as well as mushrooms and sprinkle a dash of seasonings to taste.
  • Sauté for about 4 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the mushrooms soften and browns slightly.
  • Dust them with flour and give it a nice stir to coat well.
  • Cook further for 3 minutes, stirring at times, until the flour browns and stir in a bout of red wine.
  • Empty the can of beef broth into it, stir and bring it to a boil.
  • Reduce it to a simmer and continue to do so for 13 minutes or until the sauce reduce considerably.
  • Stir in rest of the Worcestershire sauce, adjust the seasonings if necessary and remove from heat.
  • Smother the patties with this prepared sauce and wrap a sheet of aluminum foil over it.
  • Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until the meat is cooked through with a slight pinkish tinge in the middle.
  • Serve warm.
