How to Cook Beef Stew

Serves: 12

Ingredients needed to make beef stew:

3 lb boneless beef, cut into medium-sized chunks
4 carrots, peeled and sliced
3 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
2 yellow onions, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 celery stalks, sliced
3 cup beef broth
1 cup red wine
3 tbsp vegetable oil
¼ cup all purpose flour
1 bay leaf
2 tsp salt
½ tsp rosemary, dried
1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
½ tsp thyme, dried
Few parsley sprigs, for garnishing

Cooking instructions for beef stew:

Heat oil over moderately high heat, in a large heavy-bottomed pan and wait until it turns smoking hot.
Brown the beef in it and stir in a dash of salt and black pepper; transfer into a plate and set aside.
Saute the onions in the same pan for about 4-5 minutes or until they soften and reduce the heat before stirring in the flour.
Continue to stir fry for another couple of minutes and add the garlic.
Cook for a minute and pour a splash of wine to it; simmer the stew for for about 5 minutes or until it thickens.
Pour in the broth, along with the browned beef, dried herbs and the bay leaf.
Give it a nice stir, place a lid on top and continue to simmer gently over slow flame for an hour.
Throw in the celery, carrots and potatoes, fasten the lid back to the pan and heat further for another half an hour.
Once the veggies are cooked through and tender, adjust the seasonings as per your preference and remove the stew from heat.
Set it aside for about 15-20 minutes and then pour it into a large serving bowl.
Place some parsley sprigs to garnish and serve.
It tastes best with steamed white rice or crusty French bread.
