How to Cook Crumpets

Yields: 10-12 crumpets

Preparation time: 15 mins + 1 ½ hours (inactive)

Cooking time: 30 mins

Ingredients needed to make Crumpets:

  • 6 oz all purpose flour
  • 6 oz strong white flour
  • 12 fl oz warm milk
  • 2 sachets (7 gm each) instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 7 fl oz warm water
  • Sunflower oil, for cooking

Cooking instructions for Crumpets:

  • Place both kinds of flours in a bowl and sprinkle the yeast over them.
  • Stir them all together to mix well and set aside.
  • Place the warm milk in a bowl and stir in sugar until it dissolves completely.
  • Tip it over the dry mixture and fold them together into a uniform, smooth batter.
  • Beat the batter for 4-5 minutes to trap the air into it and place a lid on top.
  • Set aside for an hour to allow the batter to rise up and then deflate again.
  • Dissolve a dash of salt and bicarbonate of soda in warm water and drizzle it over the batter.
  • Pour in ¾ cup water and stir them together to thin it out into a heavy cream-like consistency.
  • Place the lid back on and let it stand for another 20 minutes.
  • Warm up a flat griddle over moderate heat and wipe few drops of oil within the inner side of metal crumpet rings or chef’s rings to grease.
  • Place the oiled rings onto the hot griddle and heat it up over moderate flame.
  • Pour a couple of dessert spoonfuls of the batter into each ring and cook for 5 minutes or until the surface is set and becomes bubbly.
  • Flip the crumpets carefully, while they are still in their rings and cook the other side for 3 more minutes.
  • Slide them onto serving plate and set aside until cool enough to handle.
  • Slide out the chef’s rings gently and dot them with lots of softened butter.
  • Serve warm.
