Have you been Eating Horse all this time? Find out with our Handy Quiz!
The horse meat scandal is huge news in much of Europe, particularly in the UK, where the news originally broke. Initially it was believed that traces of horsemeat were turning up in beef products, but in a large number of cases, the entire meat content of a product (claiming to be beef) was revealed to be horse. To add to the insult, the horsemeat being fraudulently served was not fit for human consumption, sparking fears of contamination of the human food chain with vetenary drugs which are dangerous to humans, like “Bute” (or Phenylbutazone). So, have you eaten it horse recently? Find out, definitively*, with our scientifically water-tight** quiz.
You’re hungry and you really fancy something meaty. You:
- Get drunk. Then find the greasiest kebab shop and chose a Doner kebab; sliced off the the entirely solid “elephant leg” of perfectly smooth, matte grey, animal-agnostic meat paste
- Head to the supermarket, pick up some expensive-looking beef burgers
- Head to the butcher, and ask what he recommends
You’re doing your weekly food shop. You’re attracted to some meat. It’s priced at:
- £0.69
- £4
- £10
You know your food is of good quality when you read the following on its packaging:
- Findus Frozen Lasagne
- Aberdeen Angus Beef
- Sourced from the farm down the road
You look at the ingredients on the back of your packaging and find:
- They’re written in Romanian
- There are some disconcertingly long words in there
- Your fresh food doesn’t have any packaging
You like your meat to look like:
- A dinosaur/one of 9 different “nugget” shapes/suspiciously multicoloured
- It’s non-threatening
- The animal it came from had a decent innings
Your views on animal welfare roughly correspond to the following:
- Grind all the different animals together from birth and pass the savings on to me
- It’s pretty important, which is why I’ll chose Burger King over McDonald’s
- It’s the no. 1 food priority
So, if you mainly picked:
1: You’ve eaten plenty of horse: hooves, mane, teeth – every constituent part
2: It’s pretty likely you will have eaten horse
3: It’s still pretty likely. Alas, we’re looking at the tip of the iceberg, and however hard we all try to eat well and ensure good providence of our food, it’s not unlikely that somewhere along the line, contamination is inevitable. But hey, at least you tried!
Still, perhaps this might encourage us all to be better informed about where our food comes from. Make sure you:
