How to Make a 7-Layer Bean Dip
A simple and tasty 7-layer bean dip recipe for dinner, parties, or appetizers.
Ingredients
- 1 Avocado, peeled, chopped
- 2 cups re-fried beans, homemade or one 15-ounce can
- 1/4 cup green Anaheim chilies, chopped
- 1 cup Monterrey Jack cheese or shredded cheddar
- 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
- 1 tsp. adobo sauce, Tabasco chipotle sauce or chipotle powder
- 1 tomato, seeds and juice removed, chopped
- 1 tsp. bacon fat (optional)
- 1 1/2 can ripe black olives, sliced
- Salt
- 1/3 cup sour cream
Instructions
- Heat re-fried beans in a cast iron skillet or a medium saute pan.
- Stir in ¼ cup water to obtain a creamy consistency that is easily dip-able.
- Bacon fat greatly enhances the taste of the re-fried beans; add one teaspoon bacon fat to canned beans and one tablespoon when making beans from scratch.
- If you don’t like bacon fat, olive oil is the best alternative.
- Stir in cumin, regular chili powder, or adobo sauce, or Tabasco, or chipotle chili powder to taste.
- The sour cream and avocados will help in cooling down the spiciness of re-fried beans significantly.
- Add in salt based on the saltiness of the tortilla chips and re-fried beans.
- Spread the hot and bubbly beans over the base of a warm serving dish.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the beans while they are still hot so it can melt.
- Layer on the tomatoes, chopped avocado, and chopped chilies.
- Spoon over the sour cream, top with olives and green onions and serve immediately with the tortilla chips.
