Cooking instructions for Death by Chocolate Cake:

  • Warm up your oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Spread a grease-proof paper across a 25 cm wide cake pan and set aside.
  • Break the chocolate into rough chunks and toss it into the upper bowl of a double boiler.
  • Heat over moderate flame until it melts.
  • Meanwhile, crack the eggs in a bowl, attached to a stand mixer and empty the cup of sugar into it.
  • Sprinkle the flour, baking as well as cocoa powder and vanilla extract into it.
  • Beat them at moderate speed until well combined into a uniform mixture, free of lumps and drizzle the melted chocolate into it gradually.
  • Add the softened butter into it, followed by the sour cream and fold them all together until they blend into a smooth batter.
  • Tip the mixture into the prepared cake pan and bake in the oven at preheated temperature for about 50 minutes or until the cake is baked through.
  • Remove from oven and allow the cake to rest until the temperature cools down to room temperature.
  • Place it in a fridge to chill for about half an hour and remove the cake from the pan onto a cake plate.
  • Slice off the rough edges of the cake as well as the crust and cut it horizontally into two equal layers.
  • To make the frosting, pour the whipping cream into a clean saucepan and heat it over moderate heat until warmed through.
  • Fold in the chocolate chunks until the latter melts and blends into the cream to forma smooth mixture.
  • Turn off the heat and set aside until the frosting mixture cools down and turns thicker.
  • Spread 1/3 of it over the bottom layer of the cake and place the top layer over it.
  • Smother the surface of this top layer with another 1/3 of the frosting and smooth out its surface with a spatula.
  • Use rest of the frosting to coat the sides of the cake and refrigerate until the frosting is set.
  • Remove from the fridge and set aside until the cake reaches room temperature.
  • Slice and serve.
